Chapter 15

RACING PORSCHES, RACING NUMBERS

Life zoomed on, and soon enough, I found an entirely new set of challenges. As both Financial Controller and VP of Sales, I’d achieved a lot at the architectural company. But my third marriage brought me to a new crossroads.

Although I was thriving in this job, my new husband really wanted to move to Orange County. An avid diver, he wished to take advantage of the beautiful weather in the San Fernando Valley. Looking back, I realize that he didn’t really respect my identity as a businesswoman or my desire to stay with that company. But it was still my decision to go with him to Orange County, keep our marriage, leave my business, and start over again in a new company.

This series of decisions seemed to take me off track. But actually, my career was shifting into high gear, as life got even more exciting: Porsche hired me as a controller in their race car division.

Talk about exhilarating! This new world literally ran at over 100 miles per hour. In my new industry, safety was paramount—our number-one concern at every moment. And all of the paperwork we submitted was ultra-detailed, from the engineering specs to the methodical German-style financial statements. Porsche was built on precision, and everything we did reflected that.

But we also paid attention to each client’s unique needs and desires. Every driver was different, and even the race courses had their own idiosyncrasies. We sold race cars to numerous celebrities, including the president of AT&T, and we took personal care with each client.

Porsche exposed me to the wonderful world of racing—but that fast-paced world also taught me that there was no benefit to speeding through life. I had to make a conscious effort to find time to stop and smell the roses.

One day, I looked around and realized that not all of our Porsche executives drove Porsches! That looked like bad marketing to me, so I wrote to Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany that I believed management should back their own products and only drive Porsches.

Headquarters was quick to respond to my request. They sent everyone on our management team a custom-made Porsche directly from Germany. Mine was a Carrera with soft, luxurious seats and a beautiful taupe exterior. At first, I got quite a lift driving around in my new, fancy car, reveling in the admiring glances that floated my way as I roared down the street. However, like all materialistic toys, the fun was fleeting and the novelty wore off. I learned that even the finest luxury goods never bring true happiness and contentment—but it was fun for a short while!

After a few years, I left Porsche. My husband worked as a consultant and general manager for a washer company in Gardena, and when their controller resigned with no notice, he panicked and begged me to take on the position. Together we organized the department, automated the books, and made some other significant improvements.

As it turned out, my husband and I split up in 2006.
